Sound & Spoken Word Workshop

Listening, Moving & Collective Sound

This workshop explores how sound, environment, memory, and spoken reflection can function as collaborative forms of storytelling.

The session would ideally take place outdoors in locations such as Sefton Park or another public green space in order to create a more informal and reflective environement.

Sound Walk

Participants walk together recording:

  • Environmental sounds

  • Conversations

  • Footsteps

  • Birds

  • Traffic

  • Breathing

  • Moments of silence

Possible recording tools:

  • Hand-held recorders for a more official feel if possible

  • Phone voice memo apps e.g. MOTIV Audio

  • Collaborative playlists

Spoken Reflection

Participants may choose to read writings aloud, record anonymous reflections, create spoken-word pieces, or discuss themes collaboratively.

Example Prompt
What sounds do you associate with care, anxiety, or waiting?

Exhibiting Sound

Given the nature of the exhibition and there likely being lots of content to read and discuss, the incorporation of sound elements will most likely take the form of listening stations either in one area of the exhibition or scattered around the space. Having listening elements gives audience members multiple modes of engagement within the show aiding to accessible and general learning ability.

Some other potential exhibition formats could include:

  • QR-code audio trails

  • Performance

  • Timed sound work

  • Sound elements used as part of a film of the workshops and exploration
