Zine Workshop

This workshop encourages participants to produce collaborative or individual zines (Or both!) exploring personal experiences surrounding fertility, healthcare, transition, waiting, care, family, and future identity.

The zine format is particularly relevant due to its long-standing relationship with queer and trans communities as a method of self-expression, knowledge sharing, and community building outside institutional structures.

How To Make A Zine

How the zines are actually made will be gone over in more detail during the session but here is a simple photo-based example of how to make a zine:

Example Zine Structure

The zines could take many forms and it is completely up to how the participants wish to go about it.

However, some examples could include:

  • Knowledge sharing, e.g. What is fertility preservation? And what happens if you choose to do it?

  • Poetry zines e.g. a collection of short poems or writings

  • Arty zines e.g. lots of drawings or collage

  • Expressive combination of all the above

Possible Materials

  • Recycled paper

  • Photocopies

  • Magazines

  • Scissors

  • Coloured pens

  • Stickers

  • Tracing paper

  • Stamps

  • Glue

  • Tape

As this workshop will likely become more individual, it is important to keep people working in a collective manner too. A way to do this could be collective reflections and check-ins, an example prompt for this could be:

“What would you want another trans person to know?”
